The following is my philosophy of education

In a world centered around success and money, it is difficult to express in words why I believe that students should be educated in the art of music when I know that the market is saturated, and it is very unlikely for someone to earn their living through music alone. Although I, along with all of my musician colleagues know that this should be no deterrent to experience music, I know that many people who have not experienced the joy of music might think otherwise.

As a music student, performer, recording artist, and teacher, I know the role that music education has played in my personal and professional growth. believe that music is an integral part to any student’s education. Music promotes leadership, teamwork, and can develop strong work ethics in students. Though, I believe that in order for these things to be accomplished, an environment of mutual respect is integral.

Having been fortunate enough to have participated in many different musical experiences, I like to draw on any/all of them so that I might share my passion for music with my students.

I am a great supporter of John Dewey’s philosophy in that education is built on the experiences gained throughout life, and not necessarily through words memorized from a book. I believe this to be especially true for music. Although, in my curriculum there would be a solid foundation on theory and musicianship, I would try to relate the concepts put forth through tonal theory by showing them musical examples that they are already familiar with. To keep with Dewey’s ideas, I would try and have my students be involved as much as possible, so that perhaps they can glean their own conclusions and grow as a result.

In a high school setting, I believe that music should be a general program. Though it is very rewarding to participate in a small ensemble, I think that its necessary to include all willing participants in music. I think that everyone deserves the chance to be up on a stage, and to be recognized and appreciated for their work and dedication to their art.
